  • The landlords don’t put obstacles to these because of any fire risk, but because they don’t want to cede control. In the same way as you are here technically not allowed to attach a flag to your balcony, or put an anti-war poster in your window.

And that’s only a relevant problem, because in Germany a far higher proportion of flats are rented than in the UK. That has to do with work mobility (when you lose your job, you are expected to look in other cities, too), and also with the fact that in Germany, an own custom-built house will often sell at a substantial loss.

(tasch, 19.5.20226)

  • It is wild how many stars and things align now which can only speed up the transition away from fossil fuels to renewable energy. This is probably something that neither Putin nor Trump nor Netanyahu nor Iran’s religously fanatic government had in mind.

By the way, do Southeast European countries still generate electricity from oil? I read that some electric grids were already strained on hot summer days, because of demand for air conditioning.

  • I’ve been using linux for about 20 years and have never used a tiling WM. What are the benefits?

Depends a lot on what you are doing. For programming:

    • much better use of screen real estate, more code fits on your display - you need to work less from memory
    • the above is even more useful if your vision is not perfect.
    • very fast switching between e.g. terminal and editor. This is very well suited for repetetive workflows like edit - compile - test - read documentation
    • good for keyboard-centered mode of work, like writing code.
    • good if you want several screens / workspaces for working on several somewhat separate tasks

For the record, I am using StumpWM, a manual tiling WM. If it isn’t available, I prefer i3wm (or sway) since it is standard. But I like the manual layout control more.

  • A long and insightful text aiming to understand a complex, changed world.

If you have a bit of time, cook up some good coffee and enjoy reading. Many paragraphs contain real gems.

Apart from the examples given in the text, what I was immediately thinking in was how much Oracle is hated in the corporate world for its strategy of sucking blood and creating destructive dependencies, and how much the rise of Amazon and the current concept of online commerce is contributing to European city centers becoming empty of shops and losing their very character as hubs of economical exchange and also social encounters.
