A strong Europe needs independent digital spaces. We believe true digital sovereignty thrives on a competitive, contestable, open ecosystem where diverse platforms co-exist. Today, we’re expanding our presence to W, the new social media. By being on #W, we want to boost alternatives and support all efforts toward a decentralised web. And we continue to invest into our presence on the Fediverse!

It took the EU commission 2 years to join #Mastodon and within 2 months, it joined a closed-source alternative

… and that’s the name they went with?? If they’re making a Twitter clone, why not riff on the name Twitter? If you had to go with a single-letter name (which is already stupid), why W of all letters? Nobody’s going to say “Hey man, did you see my post on Double-Yoo last night?” At least make it Z or something, making Zed posts sounds way better.

Of all the letters to pick, Z is probably not the one to go for when the Russian army is using it as a symbol for their invasion

I would assume they named it W to play on the W/L win/lose thing. And if it magically did become popular it’d probably just be Dub

I don’t care about W, X or Z. As long as they keep and use a sovereign instance in the fediverse, they still have a presence in the right place.

A bigger concern is convincing people and content producers to switch from X/IG/FB/TikTok/etc to the fediverse.
