My 83 year old grandmother with budding dementia watches nonstop AI generated stories set in pre-industrial times on YouTube, only second to court TV. She says it’s comforting, and she just wants to be entertained with content that feels like the same thing.

Everytime I opened Facebook recently, all I see are conservatives being butt hurt about anything that isn’t conservative. A post about how a Democrat is trying to increase school lunch programs? That’ll apparently bankrupt the parents of the kids through taxes. Holding discussions about the water shortages and how to better help farmers? A waste of tax payer money apparently. A proposition to increase taxes for the rich and decrease it for the poor to help part for social services? Well that’ll drive out the entire local economy and kill small business. I swear, it’s the most delusional shit I’ve ever seen

Aside from the majority being bots. Why would anyone comment these sorts of one word comments that don’t add anything to the discussion? Like, what is the purpose of those?

Is it really that they think their opinion is somehow so important, it is imperative everyone else knows how they feel about a picture of a house? Do they also scream when their food at a restaurant is yummy? Or call everyone over to admire the shit someone left in the toilet?

Does nobody curate their FB feed or use browser plug-ins to remove the garbage? Immediately “X”-ing unwanted ads, people, or pages keeps them at bay for a good while. Plug-ins like “social media fixer” will automatically remove “recommended” and any other unwanted junk you choose via phrase or keyword.

It can be usable and useful for when you want it if you take the time to fix it. I prefer it to reddit these days specifically because I can control what shows up on my screen, unlike reddit cramming in-line ads, suggested /r/ I don’t want to see, and …well, fuck spez for wrecking what used to be a cool place. Otherwise there is no point at all in using it.

Pretty much anybody who knows how to do those things also knows better than to use Facebook. What do you even go on there for? Also this is like windows fanboy levels of cope. Like “I know this software is designed to spy on everything I do and send all that info back to the literally evil corporation that’s fucking over the planet and ruining everything, and I know that’s it’s objectively bad and terrible to use, but if you just do this list of 100 tweaks and hacks it makes it slightly less terrible!”

There are several hobby groups as well as industry groups I beong to and use it for.

        Could you be more dramatic?

Edit: if you don’t like plug-ins, why don’t you remove all your ad-blockers and anything else you use to make the internet more usable? Seeing as you’re against people using “hacks” to make things usable.

The only way to get news from my city utilities, mayor, or literally anything local is through Facebook. They do not have a website. Tons of small towns operate like this.

Why is my water brown? I’ll have to log into Facebook to find out.

15 years ago someone in their 50s showed me an obvious CGI of a ball bouncing around a bunch of musical instruments miraculously ‘playing them’ and they thought that was real… And later that year they thought they’d gotten a great deal by buying a fancy RV from someone in Japan for $5000 (shockingly was a scam). They are a frequent enjoyer of facebook today and probably not even the most easily fooled person that age that I know.

Has FB been taken over by bots like Reddit? (I don’t use either any more.)

It was always run by a psychopath, but 2 decades ago it was really a social platform where you got content posted by people you knew. There is not much left of that.

Except the old folks home is really bots, and also the ragebait is bots. I don’t like where this is heading, because it sounds like we’re gonna have a lot of angry bots on our hands.

Every trump ballroom render was genai, and not a single person on Lemmy flagged it either.

If AI provides the red cloth to an audience looking for a red cloth, they will see a red cloth.
