Gentle reminder that introvert/extravert has no basis in fact. It’s just a meme based on some flawed semi-mystical reckonings of Jung.
We’re all social mammals. We all find socialising draining at different times and situations, we all tend to have worse mental health outcomes the more isolated we are, we all benefit from being part of an accepting social group.
Yo can you provide a source? Not because it seems implausible, but because I’m really interested now lol
Ugh… not really. 😆
A lot comes from just personal experience - people instantly peg me as extroverted but i’m often deeply uncomfortable in groups. I find socialising either energizing or draining depending on who, how often, what else is going on in my life. I’ve seen self-identified introverts reveling in socialising and clearly feeling better for it. Even theories that take it seriously admit that everyone has a mix of both traits. We can’t say that people are either X or Y and also that everyone is a mix of both.
From my experience with my own, my dad’s, wife’s and friends’ struggles and from working in mental health, i’ve seen that isolation strongly correlates with doing worse. Studies also claim that extraverts are always happier - in aggregrate we’re better off when we socialize more. Being isolated or having only few or weak social connections is a weakness for a social mammal, and thus a stressor. Of course we are more likely to thrive with richer and more secure social resources.
I read Jung talking about it and it just seemed nonsense. Today psychology mostly agrees, but still uses the terms to talk about more and less sociable people. Known pseudo-science like the for-profit astrology that is Meyers-Briggs are really big on it.
If you just look at the blue and red list of traits on the wikipedia page i’m sure you’ll be able to think of times when you’ve experienced every trait on both sides.
“source?”
“ugh nah lmao trust me bro x)”
It’s part of the big five personality model that is the current best understanding psychologists have of human personality. People vary a lot in terms of how much social contact they want, regardless of the things you said.
I also hate the… the letter psych test, whatever it’s called. Well, I guess I should like it because I know how to bullshit it and get my resume looked at by hr peeps.
Also, it still works in this context. Some people might feel CLAM at some time while others feel OTTR at the same time and take the metaphorical rock and CRSH them.
The 16 personality types? Yeah, that shit is also completely made up pseudoscience.
Basically as useful as zodiac signs
Mhhm. My psych proff used up a whole lecture to completely eviscerate it lol.
I still stan the OCEAN model, and Eysenck’s. Both include extraversion.
MTBI personality typing is straight up bullshit, but extraversion is also part of the psychologically validated big five model. It’s pretty persistent over time.
I come to lemmy hoping to catch comments like thrs one… thank you
Introverts:
A clam says, “No. I do not want to open up”
Extroverts:
A sea otter is looking at the clam, then raises a rock above it’s head with both hands, as if it’s going to smash open the clam.
last time thos was posted, it was titled with
what extroverts think introverts are like
or something similar…
Do it~ 🥺
Fuck extros.
Usually car sales people, or other marketing types, c_suite. Perhaps their brains are more deserving of oxygen,
