I had to move back in for one year after 8 on my own. Probably the worst year for all of us. So much arguing.
Had to go back after 15 years out and about. My roommate at the time and still good friend unexpectedly started a family. I hold nothing against him and am glad they’re doing well. This was shortly after the pandemic wherein rent had suddenly tripled in my area. I’ve found myself stuck, but at least grateful that my family has been more than accommodating. But I’ll be damned if it isn’t trying.
I had to move back after 10 years out. And actually it was fine for me.
Things that helped:
- It was only a few months
- My parents are chill
- I’m chill
- I knew what path I was following to leave, at least approximately

Wait until laundry day. The first time I did my own laundry, half of the clothes changed colour and the other half got destroyed.
What decade was this? I think detergents have improved over time to be gentler on clothes.
also detergents working at lower temperatures, i just run everything at the generic 30-40°C mode and i have never had a problem at all
You shouldn’t use detergent anyway. It is terrible for a fabrics moisture wicking abilities, so shouldn’t be used on anything that supposed to take up moisture and/or will be in prolonged contact with your skin. It is literally polluting the ground water and costs money.
Well now we all learned why you smell funny. Wash your clothes in detergent
Ah, my bad, I was talking about fabric softener, not simple detergent. Not sure what I was thinking. :D
i half-agree with fabric softener. it has a place (it’s great for static) but i just personally don’t like it. also, never never never use fabric softener on towels it ruins them.
source: the immediate family used to live in and operate a dry cleaner when i was too small to know anything, but they taught me the tips when i grew up.

I don’t think I have. During college I went home every 2 weeks with my dirty laundry. After college my roommate did my laundry for me, because she liked doing it. What does it mean to “wipe your ass”?
It’s just that where I’m from it’s very typical for children of a family to help with chores to some degree. So most people I know had been doing their laundry for years when time came for them to move out, but basically everyone has done it before and roughly knows how to.
It feels absurd that something as basic as washing your clothes could be a task a grown adult has never done before. I could see children of rich as fuck families never having to do it but like… why would your parents not teach you?!
By “wiping your own ass” I was referring to basic personal hygiene in general, since that seems about as basic as doing laundry, dressing yourself or cooking for yourself.

Funny enough, I could cook from a very early age, in part because I was a picky eater and my mother’s (reasonable) stance was “If you don’t like what I’m having, make something yourself.”
But uh, I can remember times when I was looking up recipes for “Flour + [whatever else was left in the cupboard]” to have something in my belly before payday, or going without entirely, lmao.
Super important to teach life skills even if they aren’t ever planning to move out.
Oof, totally opposite here. First time I cooked after I moved out I actually got to eat the leftovers instead of finding everything was gone by the next morning!
